Overview

Specialties
Correctional Nursing, Management/Admin/Leadership, and Professional Development

The authoritarian nature of correctional settings requires that nurse leaders have strong leadership skills, and a firm grasp of the ethical principles required to create a culture of quality and safety where nurses can thrive.  For nurses contemplating a move into a leadership position and those existing correctional nurse leaders who wish to elevate their present knowledge and skills, this presentation will introduce the principles of correctional nurse leadership and provide resources that will support the acquisition of those principles and skills.  Our panel for this presentation – Mary Muse, Heather Norman, Lori Roscoe and Deborah Shelton – are four acknowledged leaders in our specialty and collectively have a wealth of knowledge to share with correctional nurses.

Learning Objectives

  1. Articulate the importance, accountability, and responsibility of being a nurse leader.
  2. Explore resources that support correctional nurses considering a career pivot to a leadership role.
  3. Discuss the inclusion of leadership principles in nursing orientation, continuing education, and certification.
  4. Differentiate between soft leadership skills and hard leadership skills and how each skill set supports the transition from staff nurse to nurse leader.
